Year of the Water Dragon

The Chinese new year is just around the corner and we are looking forward to the Year of the Dragon. Specifically, the Year of the Water Dragon which rules from January 23, 2012 to February 9, 2013.

According to the Chinese Zodiac the year of the dragon only occurs every 12 years and the water dragon only every 60 years! The dragon occupies the fifth position in the Chinese Zodiac and is the mightiest of the signs. The water element calms the dragons fire. A great combination for a great year ahead.

To celebrate 2012 the Year of the Dragon we have put together a great selection of jewellery and artwork.

The result is a unique and engaging style developed through her academic study. She employs traditional, digital and mixed media techniques to capture the audience using visual communication. Rosalind’s work is whimsical, etherial, emotive and raw.

Artist Biography – Kelly Spencer

Kelly discovered her niche in watercolour which delivers a perfect contrast of concentration and unpredictability. She gets great satisfaction out of laying on the paint thick, wet, and bright.

SEDUCTIVE MECHANIZM at Pixel Ink Gallery

Pixel Ink Gallery presents SEDUCTIVE MECHANIZM a body of new stencil works by KIRAN-X opening on Wednesday the 1st of June.

“I’m interested in how people are used in the construction of advertising imagery, models are dieted, composed, photo manipulated and hyper sensualised to endorse products of want, from desire,” says KIRAN-X.

“What fascinates me is not the product but the process in which the imagery is engineered and how models are robotically mechanized,” he adds.

The exhibition is themed around a reverse engineered collection of advertising imagery pulled apart and reassembled to illustrate a series of new works that focus on the visual mechanical elements of desire.

“Ironically the ‘Dr Frankenstein’ process of stenciling has graphically transformed the models into androids who are now liberated from a product, or perhaps becoming the product,” says KIRAN-X.

These android characters resonate the artist's own metaphor of an industrial hazard aesthetic where desire and danger are forged together.

KIRAN-X said that the exhibition is inspired by Bjork music videos and Japanese Anime for their exploration of instinctive human impulses through computerization.

Pixel Ink Gallery director, Rosalind Clark said the aerosol stencil works in this exhibition illustrate an expressive correlation between the way the source material has been broken down and stylized to become part of the aesthetic.

“The works hold their strength in physical form with hints of grit and rawness which adds to the artist's intention of exposing a manipulated process,” says Clark.

SEDUCTIVE MECHANIZM runs from the 1st of June – 26th June at Pixel Ink Gallery, 219 Cuba Street, Wellington.

Narrative Playgrounds at Pixel Ink Gallery

Narrative Playgrounds is a visual art exhibition of works from New Zealand artists inspired by stories and the imagination opening on the 29th of April at Pixel Ink Gallery.

Gallery director, Rosalind Clark, said the exhibition is all about translating the imagination onto a blank canvas.

“An explosion of whimsey, fairy tale magic, imaginary landscapes and fictional characters,” says Clark.

Artists from around the country were invited to submit artworks for the group show.

The artist's brief was to capture the essence of a dramatic scene playing out in their mind from a familiar narrative or a creation of their own imagination.

Clark said the only requirement was that the artworks contain a story unfolding around characters, settings or objects.

The exhibition features artists from Wellington, New Plymouth, Taupo, Tauranga and Hamilton.

All artworks are available for sale and priced below $1000.

The exhibition Narrative Playgrounds runs from the 29h of April – 29th of May at Pixel Ink Gallery, 219 Cuba Street, Wellington.

The exhibition opens on Friday the 25th of March at Cuba Street's Pixel Ink Gallery.

Walker is visually exploring the 4 billion year long process of evolution upon our fair planet.

“From bacteria through algae and ocean life, to exotic bird and plant life, and our possibly strange future,” she explains.

Walker's latest works are influenced by Sir David Attenborough and Richard Dawkins.

“And a sense of wonder at the glorious diversity, strange history, and the future demise of the creatures on Earth,” adds Walker.

The colourful and illustrative paintings in this exhibition are created with ink, watercolour and a hint of spraypaint.

Four Billion Years Later is Walker's second solo show at Pixel Ink Gallery following on from her successful Jellyfish Crossroads exhibition in 2010.

Sketches from Birmingham at Pixel Ink fashion boutique & art gallery

Sketches from Birmingham is the first Spring/Summer Collection from Wellington illustrated fashion label Nouveau.

Combining easy to wear knit fabrics, oversized silhouettes, residual military details, and exaggerated whimsical prints inspired by woodland and urban creatures.

The collection of New Zealand made illustrative fashion launches alongside an exhibition of new works on paper by designer and artist Rosalind Clark.

Clark's sketches have also been reproduced as prints on apparel exclusively for the collection.

“I like to provide accessible art to reach a wider audience. Prints on apparel allow me to do this. However, I also love the tactile quality and importance of an original work. Which is why I choose to exhibit the original work alongside this collection," says Clark.

Clark began her career as a freelance illustrator after graduating from Massey University in 2006. She studied a Bachelor of Design majoring in illustration and also completed a number of fashion papers.

Clark said Massey provided her with an opportunity to combine conceptual design with practical hands on garment construction techniques.

After university she worked for a New Zealand fashion house in Morrinsville in production and later as a graphic designer.

Clark started making her own printed t-shirts in 2008 and established the Nouveau women's and Deco men's illustrated fashion labels which she sold in stores in Hamilton and Wellington.

In addition to her fashion labels, Clark also established and co-owns Pixel Ink.

The Pixel Ink fashion boutique & art gallery on Cuba Street retails a great selection of New Zealand fashion labels, jewellery, accessories and artwork from emerging designers, illustrators and artists.

Pixel Ink is currently the exclusive stockist of Nouveau and Deco which is proudly New Zealand made.

“Keeping the labels New Zealand made and geared towards illustration but not limited to it is very important to me,” says Clark.

As a special offer on the opening night only all purchases from the Nouveau and Deco ranges instore will get 25% off (excludes artworks).

Opening night is Friday the 26th of November from 5:30pm at Pixel Ink fashion boutique & art gallery on Cuba Street.

Nouveau S/S 2010/11 Collection

Nouveau's first Spring/Summer 2010/11 Collection Sketches from Birmingham combines easy to wear knit fabrics, oversized silhouettes, residual military details, and exaggerated whimsical prints inspired by woodland and urban creatures.

Exhibition/Artist Statement

"While embarking on an overseas experience I began filling my sketch book with drawings - some with familiar creatures and figures - some of foreign wonders seen for the first time on the other side of the world. All sketches evoke elements of distortion and whimsy and were largely inspired by my time in the UK midlands. The works on paper exhibited in Sketches from Birmingham are formed of loose line work and water colour.

This exhibition also marks the first Spring/Summer Collection of my Nouveau illustrated fashion label. I like to take a disconnected - then connected - approach to designing screen prints for fashion. I'll wait for a sketch to come to me. I might accidentally think I see it somewhere then realise it was an illusion and quickly sketch it down. At this stage it doesn't hold any intent to become a print as part of a coherent collection.

I like to provide accessible art to reach a wider audience. Prints on apparel allow me to do this. However, I also love the tactile quality and importance of an original work. Which is why I choose to exhibit the original work alongside this collection."

- Rosalind Clark, Nouveau designer and illustrative artist
