Bandwagon cover art: School Daze by Rosalind Clark

In the Arms of Sleep is an exhibition of new paintings by Rosalind Clark which explore the different stages between being conscious and falling asleep.

The exhibition opens on Wednesday 26 May at Pixel Ink Gallery.

For Clark, who is also the gallery director this will be her third solo exhibition.

“The paintings in this exhibition feature feminine figures sleeping, which appear to melt into surreal, almost abstract, backgrounds,” says Clark. “Experiencing dream-like states in which the unconscious mind slips in and out of reality.”

This fleeting dream-like state of being is fascinating to Clark because it is both romantic and imaginative.

According to Clark, sleep can appear to be an angelic, peaceful state.

“[Sleep] may appear as an indulgence or even a luxury, but to the dreamer, underneath closed eyes it could also be a nightmare.”

Clark said she is particularly intrigued by instances in which a person finds themselves in a state they don’t want to be in.

“A lucid dream where the dreamer is aware they are asleep but cannot wake up.”

“The alternative is where a person experiencing insomnia wants to sleep but can’t reach this desired state.”

In the Arms of Sleep visually illustrates the different stages of consciousness.

The exhibition runs from the 26 May – 12 December at Pixel Ink Gallery, 219 Cuba Street, Wellington.

Artist Statement

As an illustrator and artist, Rosalind Clark combines the charm of sketched line with the truth fullness of photo media as the foundation of her contemporary practice. Her work is
typically narrative and figurative, communicating deep emotive and metaphorical themes. She experiments with collage to achieve a balance of rough vs. detailed imagery. The result is a unique and engaging style developed through her academic study. She employs traditional, digital and mixed
media techniques to capture the audience using visual communication. Rosalind’s work is whimsical, etherial, emotive and raw.

Misty Lang - Indigo Cape Jacket

The Lovely Specimens is a body of illustrated works inspired by medical journals and brought to you by the Wellington based artist known as Used Bandaid.

The exhibition opens on Wednesday the 5th of May at Pixel Ink Gallery on Cuba Street.

Used Bandaid gently and skilfully merges fashion, illustration and manga styles with watercolour, pencil and digital mediums.

Her illustrations are soulful images of lolita vamps who gracefully radiate innocence and deviance in equal quantities.

She describes her latest works as, “Various rashes, not-so-gruesome mutilations and debilitating syndromes accentuated with coloured inks and pencil.”

Pixel Ink Gallery director, Rosalind Clark said The Lovely Specimens showcase a style popular in illustrative sub-culture.

“Used Bandaid’s work has a cult following which will help generate excitement around the exhibition,” says Clark.

Curious art lovers in need of illustrative therapy are invited to conduct their own examination from the 5th to the 23rd of May at Pixel Ink Gallery 219 Cuba Street.

Contemporary abstract artist Lauren McGrath will open her latest exhibition at the new Pixel Ink Gallery on Wednesday the 14th of April at 5.30pm.

The exhibition titled Phantom Flights explores the displacement of the significance of objects in traditional landscape painting.

Featured is a series of new and retrospective abstract paintings from 2007 to the present.

McGrath describes the works as fantastical landscapes of surreal, textured beauty, which are vibrant and evocative.

“Each painting is a combination of layered colour, texture and medium”, says McGrath.

McGrath graduated from Massey University, Wellington in 2009 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts.

She has previously exhibited in a number of group shows at Pixel Ink Gallery however this will be her first solo show.

Gallery director, Rosalind Clark said that McGrath’s surreal and dreamlike landscapes complement the illustrative artwork typically exhibited at the gallery.

The Pixel Ink Gallery recently relocated from Newtown to Cuba Street.

Artist Statement

Lauren McGrath is a contemporary Abstract Expressionist with a passion for visual texture, form and colour. She was born in Northern Ireland and raised in the cultural and artistic city of Wellington, where inspiration is always at her doorstep. Her fascination with art from a young age culminated in her studying Fine Arts at Massey University for six years, graduating in 2009. Primarily interested in exploring the elements of painting, Massey challenged her to explore and adopt new techniques which resulted in a series of time based (film and audio) Installation art.
