Suni Gibson
Eye Value

22 July – 9 August 2009

Opening preview: Wednesday 22 July 5.30 – 7.30pm

Exhibition Statement:

“Eye Value is a new series of contemporary jewellery works by Suni Gibson. The work in Eye Value examines the relevance of jewellery in contemporary consumer culture and its historic and existing use as a signifier of wealth and status. Through strategies of repetition, simulation, subtraction and illusion, the work challenges our relationship with luxury goods and the significance of jewellery in popular culture.”

Biography:

Suni Gibson’s emerging practice has been focused on an inquiry into ideas of value and the current place of historic jewellery icons in western society. Her work is lush and engaging, resonant, accessible and intellectually challenging. Suni’s work often combines more than one media and is carefully constructed using an array of traditional and ‘non-traditional’ materials and techniques. Suni’s work has been shown throughout New Zealand since 2007 and has recently been acquired for the permanent collection of the Museum of Wellington.
